Starlink is the world's first and largest satellite constellation using a low Earth orbit to deliver broadband internet capable of supporting streaming, online gaming, video calls and more.

HOW STARLINK WORKS

Most satellite internet services come from single geostationary satellites that orbit the planet at 35,786 km. As a result, the round trip data time between the user and satellite—also known as latency—is high, making it nearly impossible to support streaming, online gaming, video calls or other high data rate activities.

Starlink is a constellation of thousands of satellites that orbit the planet much closer to Earth, at about 550km, and cover the entire globe. Because Starlink satellites are in a low orbit, latency is significantly lower—around 25 ms vs 600+ ms.

Starlink Installation Techniques

Starlink is a pretty smart bit of tech and if you live in the right location such as American, Alaska, Canada etc where homes usually have flat roofs, more open spaces and wooden house construction installation is pretty straightforward. In the UK house construction especially in the remote locations where Starlink comes into its own properties are usually stone built farm houses etc, thick walls no good for the WI-FI from the router and also difficult to drill a 22mm hole in the wall for the cable to pass through. The locations for the dish can be quite tricky for the DIYer and if not used to handling heavy brackets at heights ( chimney or wall mounted ) can be dangerous.

Each installation has its own unique challenges regarding routing of cables and Starlink dish sighting, to drilling of a 22mm hole and even the routers final location. Another aspect of the installation and needs to be taken into account is the WI-FI issues that Starlink have with its lack of range which can be overcome by correct router location. To complete the installation and complement the Starlink system a Mesh system or for full speeds throughout a hard wired mesh over CAT6 can be done by us.
